THE INCREDIBLE INVENTION OF THE PLASTICINE
  • Inventor: James Wright, engineer in General Electric.

  • What he was trying to do: During World War II, the US government needed glue for airplanes, soldiers' boots and other similar things. Wright was trying to make a substitute made of silicone, as it was a fairly available material.

  • How it was created: Wright added boric acid to the substance. The result was a sticky mess. Although I could not give it a practical use, the impracticability of the Boligoma is what makes it incredible. 

  • When: During a test with silicone oil in 1943

  • Inventor: Constantine Fahlberg

  • What he was trying to do: He wanted to wash his hands before de lunch

  • How it was created: He had spilled a chemical on his hands and it, in turn, caused the bread he ate to taste unusually sweet

  • When: discovered in 1879
